Sabbath-Keeping / Holy Leisure
In Souls at Rest, I explore the many
dimensions of Sabbath rest from the point of view of the Eucharist as Sabbath’s
source and fulfillment. Since private copies of the book began to circulate, I
have had opportunities to recast portions of the material in talks on Holy
Leisure. I am passionate about the topic, because I believe Sabbath rest is the
crying need of souls in our time. The rest-less-ness
of postmodern man is a clue to his spiritual malaise – a condition known as acedia, or sloth – which manifests as hyperactivity,
busyness, depression, and inability to commit to spiritual growth, among other
things. I discuss the attractions of Sabbath rest, the practical side of
actually getting a Sabbath rest, and the implications of such rest for
individuals, families, personal creativity and health, evangelism, and culture.
