Enriching Family Culture / Home Education

In over twenty years as a home educator, I have formed a few opinions about the topic! I have had opportunities to share my thoughts at Home-School workshops and conferences, and in related publications. I find that my thoughts about education dovetail more and more with my deepening understanding of the human person, of his need for profound rest and poetry, and of the cultural forces arrayed against him. I am no longer interested in offering advice about what curriculum to use (though I do have my favorites!) and prefer to enrich the philosophical ‘soil’ by which homeschool families are nurtured and supported. Education is an integral part of the whole family culture – just one expression of our approach to life itself. Because my approach to life is strengthened considerably by humor, my talks about education and family life tend to have humorous elements. I take it very seriously, but always find myself laughing about the ways we sometimes take things too seriously. At any rate, I’ve never met a parent that couldn’t use a laugh, or a serious talk that couldn’t be improved by a bit of levity. We still have five children at home, and are stumbling along in a new farm adventure, so I am sure I’ll have an ongoing source of family life material to draw on.
