Why Argue?
(Basic
Premise for a Lecture Given on the
Topic
for a High School Class in Rhetoric)
There
are, in general, five basic reasons people avoid argument. I intend to demonstrate that each one is, in
fact, a reason to argue all the more!
1.
Discomfort with disagreements, sense of courtesy preventing
argument
2.
Lack of common ground with the other person on which to stand
3.
No opportunity or time for an involved discussion/argument
4.
Weakness in articulating position
5.
Fear of losing; of losing confidence in position or in Truth
